Garland County Sheriff's investigation results in arrest of alleged rapist
A Jessieville man was arrested late Wednesday on two felony counts of rape stemming from allegations he molested two young girls over an extended period of time.
Benjamin W. Markus, 26, who lists an address of 120 Waterworks St., turned himself in around 9:30 p.m. and was still being held Thursday without bond. He is set to appear March 20 in Hot Springs District Court and if convicted, could face up to life in prison. According to the affidavit, on Monday, an investigation was started by Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children investigator Amanda Chaney and Garland County Sheriff’s investigator Mike Wright into allegations Markus was sexually abusing children at his residence.
On Tuesday, a 6-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl were interviewed at the Cooper-Anthony Mercy Child Advocacy Center and allegedly disclosed that Markus made both of them perform oral sex on him, on different occasions, and performed oral sex on one victim.
That same day, Markus was questioned by Chaney and reportedly admitted to the allegations of sexual abuse involving both girls. He stated the incidents had taken place since about the time the girls were 3 years old and the last incident was about one month ago.
