Janet Carson Series: "Landscape Design Workshop"

Learn from the gardening masters how to design your own landscape and which plants to select for optimum impact. Janet Carson, horticultural specialist for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, and Bob Byers, the Gardens' resident landscape architect, will lead this class through the necessary steps for designing and planting an amazing outdoor space. The cost is $75 for GWG members and $85 for non-members and includes all three sessions. Advance reservations and pre-payment required. Art Exhibit featuring "Brush Strokes"

This special exhibit is entitled "God's Artwork, photographs by Jeanette Burroughs." Jeanette Burroughs, a local artist, has concentrated on photography of nature in recent years. She especially enjoys capturing its intricate details that are often missed by the casual eye. Her favorite venue is Garvan Woodland Gardens, where a majority of her photos are taken. She usually grabs her camera and runs to Garvan Gardens at times that others avoid, like a rain shower. All artwork is for sale with a percentage benefiting the Gardens.
Muses Creative Artistry Project Concert

The Opera Gala performers will present "Opera Classics" as part of the "The Muses Creative Artistry Project" concert series with a celebration of fall's arrival performing some of their favoriate arias, duets, and ensemble pieces. The cost is $25. Advance tickets are encouraged, as several of last year's concerts were sold out well in advance. Master Gardener Appreciation Day

Garvan Woodland Gardens honors Master Gardeners from across Arkansas with free admission. Master Gardener name tags or current membership cards must be shown. The day-long event will include informative lessons along the Gardens' trails. Topics include: Bonsai and Ikebana, Plant Pathology, Beekeeping and Insects, Animal Control, Trees, and "Ask Bob and Janet" with Bob Byers and Janet Carson. A special lunch will be available for purchase at the beginning of the day.
Naturalist Series: "Labyrinths & Celtic Knot Designs for Herb Gardens"
September 22Weyerhaeuser Bonsai Learning Center: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Learn the folk lore and traditional uses for herbs from naturalist Roxana Rose and then delve into the origins of labyrinths (ancient, geometric patterns with a single path that leads into the center and out again) and Celtic knot designs and their meanings, plus learn how you can incorporate these ancient symbols for healing, unity, and wholeness into your herb garden design. Class is limited to 18. The cost is $20 for GWG members and $30 for non-members. Lunch is NOT included, but can be purchased at the Chipmunk Café. Pre-registration required. Gardening 101 Workshop

Topic: "Early Fall Walk" - 9:30 a.m. to Noon
Topic: "Tree Identification" - 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
In the morning session, Garden Director Bob Byers will escort participants on an educational walk through the Gardens to identify fall features in the landscape. In the afternoon, retired University of Arkansas at Monticello professor Eric Sundell will instruct participants in how to identify native trees of Arkansas. Participants will receive a copy of the Arkansas Forestry Commission's handbook, Trees of Arkansas, and a user-friendly key that they may take home as a reference. Hot Springs Flute Ensemble Youth Concert
September 29Garvan Pavilion: 3 p.m.
Join us for this delightful afternoon concert featuring children's music. A youth choir will also perform several numbers. Songs will include such favorites as Piccolo Pete, Spoonful of Sugar, Talk to the Animals, and more. GWG members attend free; regular Gardens admission applies to non-members.
