It hardly ever snows, but it sure is white around here.

Village. A fine place to raise your children, assuming you only want them to be
exposed to white, Christian, Republican, right-wing people. It’s not that that
would be bad. It’s more like it would be unfortunate. For them.
I’ve
been looking around to see how we take advantage of the local people. We pride
ourselves in helping the school districts, which is a good thing. Both the
Fountain Lake and Jesseville school districts do quite well. The local people
who work in the Village get something quite different. The people who keep up
our golf courses are sorely underpaid. They put in long hours in tough
conditions and if not for overtime, barely make a living wage. Another group of
poorly paid workers build our homes. Several of the builders are now employing
Hispanic workers, and paying them poorly. These skilled people deserve a living
wage.
As a benefit to workers in the Village, they get free amenities if
they are at a pay grade of 10 or above. Seems that’s mainly management. Pay
grades 1-7 should get the free stuff.
I’m not so sure the POA directors
understand their job or who they are working for. They seem to think the manager
is in charge. We do not elect the manager. We elect them. You would think the
last election would have taught them that. We hold them responsible. They give
their authority to the manager. They better taketh back.
I’m going to be
sixty-five come April. In today’s society, getting to be 65 is important.
Medicare. Sixty-two it’s social security, sixty-five, Medicare. Two evil
socialist programs that the Republicans hate. At least the rich one’s. I bet
90% of the Village receives one or both. Yet I hear a lot of talk about these
being entitlement, socialist programs. Most of you better watch what you’re
wishing for.
Living behind closed gates is something you have to get used
to. In the end, I guess I’m as fearful as everyone else. It’s the darn
unforeseen: Old age, people of color, disease, financial ruin, change of any
sort. It scares you. So we close ourselves in.

Hi, Bruce. It's good to know that I am not the only liberal Democrat in the village. I enjoyed your letter and whole-heartedly agree.
ReplyDeleteBest Regards to you,

Unfortunately, the writer makes the Village sound like some "gulag" that he was forced to reside in. Regardless of the various perceived deficiencies, I must assume that they are clearly outweighed by the many good things and people of the Village that keeps him residing here. Yes, I'm a moderate conservative, but have more than a few "liberal" friends -- we all seem to get along okay so long as we respect each other and don't take ourselves too seriously in the process.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the merger of Mercy with Cappella, I can't see how the merger will be good for the patients. Mercy is a non profit hospital, therefore they do not pay propety tax on all of their many building and yet can't make it financially. Cappella is a profit hospital and will have to pay property tax on all of building and turn a profit. Medicare reimbursements will continue to go down to the hospitals according to the spokesman for Cappella. How can they possibly turn a profit without major cuts in patient care?
