The Hot Springs 2012 paving program begins tomorrow

The City of Hot Springs’ 2012 Paving Program is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, August 13. A  a list of the streets to be paved is at the bottom, and is also available on the Public Works Street Division page at www.cityhs.net . The streets are listed in the order of construction.

This year, the paving program’s cold milling and asphalt installation contracts have been awarded to Redstone Construction of North Little Rock. When construction begins, the city’s Street Division will haul the reclaimed asphalt to storage so that it can be used on other projects around the city.

The Street Division has already begun preparation for the paving program by performing tree trimming, ditch cleaning, and shoulder work.

The contracted portion of this project will first include the reclaiming or ‘cold milling’ of the existing asphalt street surface. During cold milling, about an inch of the original surface is removed, along with surface pits and bumps.  This process smooths the roadway and reestablishes the drainage capacity of curbs and gutters where they have been filled in over the years.

Once the old asphalt surface has been reclaimed, the street and gutters are thoroughly cleaned in preparation for new asphalt. Resurfacing will be done with hot mix asphaltic concrete, which provides a strong, smooth, and skid-resistant driving surface. After the new asphalt is installed, replacing or resetting traffic control markings, pedestrian crossings, and parking spaces completes the paving process.

Paving any given area takes two to four weeks, depending on the weather and normal construction-related issues. No street closures are planned during the paving program.  However, the public is advised to seek alternate routes during construction because there will be traffic delays.

Once the paving schedule begins, it will continue until completion. All work will be suspended during the Labor Day holiday week of August 31 - September 9.

Phase II will be scheduled at a later date. Streets on the Alternate List may or may not be funded in 2012; however, they will remain in cycle until they are resurfaced. For information, call 321-6865.
