With the beginning of the new school year, the Hot Springs Police Department reminds motorists of the following traffic laws:
1. The speed limit in and around school zones is 25 mph when children are present and outside of the building. Many children throughout the city walk to school daily, so motorists should look out for those pedestrians. Anyone who is in a crosswalk has the right-of-way, and motorists are strongly encouraged to stop at any and all crosswalks with pedestrian foot traffic.
2. It is a violation of state law to pass a stopped school bus while it is loading and unloading passengers. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when approaching a school bus with its emergency flashers activated. Vehicles behind the bus as well as vehicles traveling from the opposite direction must come to a complete stop and wait until the bus has deactivated its flashing lights and crossing gate/stop sign.
3. Officers will be checking school zones and issuing citations to violators.
