National dog bite prevention week coming up

During the period May 19 through 25, the U.S. Postal Service along with many other organizations, is promoting Dog Bite Prevention Week.

Dog attacks continue to be a problem for the Postal Service. Bites can range from a nip to a fatal mauling. Anyone can become a victim. Besides your mail carrier, potential victims include the dog owner, family members and neighborhood children.

By following a few preventative steps, the incidents of dog attacks can be greatly reduced. A few suggestions for responsible pet owners include:

· Keep your dog healthy.

· Spaying or neutering reduces aggressiveness.

· Teach your dog appropriate behavior and avoid aggressive games and extended periods of being tethered to dog houses or other objects such as posts.

· Don’t allow your dog to roam the neighborhood.

· Help your dog become accustomed to a variety of situations. This will help reduce fear and anxiety when the dog is confronted with delivery people and the general public.

Please join the United States Postal Service in working with your neighbors, humane societies, and local animal control officers to make our communities safe places to work and play.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

  1. A lot of the times people blame the dog breed but the human factor also helps make what the dog is
