Another rabid skunk tested positive today for rabies at the state lab, bringing to eight the total number of positive rabies cases in Garland County this year to date. The skunk was captured underneath a home located in the 700 block of Ridgeway Street, inside city limits.
The skunk was submitted to Hot Springs Animal Services after being caught last weekend in a trap set by a local pest control company. The homeowners had been having trouble with a skunk living under the house. After the company placed mesh around air conditioner pipes where the skunk seemed to enter, the skunk still evaded capture so the company left a trap. No people or animals were exposed in the process.
Pope County currently leads the state with 12 rabid skunks confirmed since January (updated state map attached).
Pet owners are reminded to vaccinate all dogs and cats at least four months old to protect them from rabies. After the first one-year vaccine is administered, a 3-year vaccine will suffice. To report any unusual daytime activity by nocturnal creatures such as skunks or bats, call Hot Springs Animal Services, 262-2091.
