Animal Welfare League news

MAY MEMBER MEETING

Claire Kelly, DVM will be the guest speaker. Dr. Kelly has been the League's veterinarian for several years. She does the health checks and spay or neuter surgeries for the intake animals and does spay/neuter surgeries, using reduced-cost vouchers', for pet owners who cannot come to AWL Clinics.

Her presentation will focus on pet dental care and caring for senior pets.

COMMUNITY FAIR     
 
Mary McCullough staffed the AWL booth at the POA Community Fair on April 24th. There was good traffic and interest in memberships and programs. The drawing prizes.....two cuddly plush dogs.....were won by Connie Cody and Charlotte Cain.

The Fair is a good way to get the AWL story out there and make some new friends.

HEADLINES
 
Members  voted to ratify the amended AWL By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation
at the April 18 member meeting. Both were accepted by wide margins. Vote totals are listed in the 4/18/13 Secretary's Minutes.

Meetings will recess for the summer months and resume in September.  The next member meeting will be September 19 at 2 p.m. in Room 6 at the Coronado Center. Important news will continue to be sent via E-blast during the summer months.

"SPRING CLEANING" at the Dog Park Site PREVIEW THE PARK AND HELP CLEAN UP

FRIENDS OF THE DOG PARK will be cleaning up the new dog park site on Wednesday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Rain date is May 24; same times. The Friends want the public to come and see the dog park site, talk with the Friends team about construction and features, provide input and get excited about this new amenity. On this day, volunteers are needed to help with clean-up (pulling weeds, raking debris; etc.).  No heavy work or hauling debris away is involved.  Light refreshments will be furnished.  Volunteers should bring work gloves, garden rakes and shovels and wear sturdy shoes. Wheelbarrows are welcome.
 
Location:  The site is off DeSoto Park Lane, off Toledo Drive beyond the recycle site at the base of DeSoto Dam. It's across from the Lawn Bowling facility.

Please note that this is NOT the start of park construction, just a general clean-up and meet and greet with the public. As this is a work day, PLEASE DON'T BRING YOUR DOG. The Friends of the Dog Park thank you for participating and hope to see you there!

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE GENERAL MEETING 4/18/2013

Mary McCullough called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with forty-one in attendance, which included the three guests. Voting to ratify the revised By-laws and Articles, took place during the Business Meeting.

Mary McCullough introduced Ricky Middleton and Gary Vaughn from the Village Police. Gary Vaughn is our liaison to the shelter,and who will be working closely with the AWL.

Martha Vaughn introduced our guest speaker, Karen Baim Reagler, an attorney who practices in elder law, estate planning, wills and guardianships. Karen gave a presentation on “How to Protect Your Pet’s Future”. Karen discussed the creation and funding of a Pet Trust to direct the care of living pets as permitted by Arkansas Pet Trust statutes. Kits and ideas are available from the Humane Society www.hsus.org/petsinwills.

Secretary’s report was read and approved. Leland Beach requested a date change in the Treasurer’s report to read the end of February 2013 instead of March 21, 2013. 

Treasurer’s Report: Leland Beach reported that as of the end of March 2013 expenses totaled $27,107.10; income of $24,994.14 with a net loss of $2,112.96; bank accounts totaled $113,668.86. Leland updated on the Fund Balances and noted the Spay/Neuter Fund was a negative but we have received a Petco Grant and also the Bob Barker Grant to off-set the balance.

Mary McCullough Updates:
·         Carol Newman, Membership Chair has submitted her resignation and Mary asked the membership is anyone was interested in the position. Mary stated we need someone who has knowledge is excel spread sheets. Carol Newman will continue until the position is filled.

·         AWL will participate in the Community Fair to be held on April 24th at the Coronado Center.  Martha Vaughn stated that the Dog Park Committee will be present at the fair in a separate booth; Martha noted that there will be upcoming fund raisers for the dog park and information will be forthcoming.
Angela Nichols updated on the next Spay and Neuter Clinic to be held on May 7 and 8th at Fountain Lake Fire Station Hwys 128 and 5.  Angela stated as of inception of the clinic we have sterilized 1200 animals. Angela talked about Leila Tolar, the daughter of Crows Fire Chief, who passed away from complications of a heart transplant. The AWL Board voted to send $100.00 donation to the family to help with medical or funeral expenses. Leila’s cat was surrendered to the shelter and Angela asked the membership if anyone would be interested in adopting the cat. Christine Beauchamp thought this would be a good interest story and suggested contacting Tom Nichols of KVRE.  Angela will follow-up.

Sandie Rickerman – “Puttin on Dog and Cat Fundraiser update: Sandie stated we do not have all the figures in as yet but she wanted to thank all the volunteers who participated but she could give statistics  for the following; $6,520 in tickets sold; Sale of raffle tickets $1,118.00 and cash donations of $340.00. She also asked the membership if they have any ideas for fundraising they could either e-mail her or Bev Fitzpatrick. It was suggested if anyone who won a basket and knows who donated it, a thank you note would be appropriate. An e-blast for the May meeting will have the final count. Carol Ralph stated that there will be an ad in the Voice thanking all the major players, vendor and restaurants. Jackie Morris noted she will be sending personal thank you notes to the restaurants.

Next fund raiser will be “Dancing with the Villagers”, Tuesday September 24th.

Mary McCullough stated the By-laws and the Articles passed by a wide margin.

Articles: 50 for, 11 against

Mary McCullough reminded the membership that the general meeting will not be held in June, July or August for summer vacation.

·         Sara Yerkes asked Leland Beach if he has received any checks from the I-give foundation.  Leland stated he was not aware of any check received.
·         Bev Fitzpatrick updated on Bo’s resignation and noted it will be three to four weeks before a replacement is hired. Liz is working seven days a week. Bev left instructions for the volunteers if no one is at the shelter. Contact people: Martha McHale, Mary McCullough and Bev Fitzpatrick if volunteer cannot get into the building,

Sara Yerkes updated on Senate Bills 13 and 14 – bills still in committee.
