Area bird watchers, from experts to novices, are invited to participate in the
annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count, which will take place on Saturday,
December 22 in Hot Springs. An informational Open House will be held from 3:30
to 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 13 from 3:30 until 5 p.m. at the Transportation
Depot, 100 Broadway Terrace.
The purpose of the bird count is to
collect data that is used to further the research of bird habitats and migratory
patterns. This, in turn, helps protect birds and their habitat in the
long-term. The event is sponsored by Hot Springs National Park, Hot Springs
Parks and Recreation Department, and the Garland County Audubon Society.
At the open house, informational
packets including sampling area maps and comprehensive bird check off lists will
be provided. Sponsoring personnel will be on hand to answer questions. Groups
are encouraged, and individuals can participate as well.
According to the National Audubon
Society, “Tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in
an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and
students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and
checklists go out on an annual mission, often before dawn.
“The data collected by observers
over the past century allow researchers, conservation biologists, and other
interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird
populations across North America. The long-term perspective made possible by the
Christmas Bird Count is vital for conservationists. It informs strategies to
protect birds and their habitat, and helps identify environmental issues with
implications for people as well.”
Completed checklists must be
submitted by December 30. For more information, contact Hot Springs National
Park Natural Resource Program Manager Steve Rudd at (501)
