P. Allen Smith's new venture

Award-winning designer, gardening and lifestyle expert P. Allen Smith will produce pet and animal related content based on animal life at his Moss Mountain Farm. Smith also hosts the eHow Home channel - one of YouTube’s six new premium channels unveiled earlier this year.

Smith’s Garden Home lifestyle brand already involves animal topics given his history of raising livestock, poultry and pets. Smith has been active for many years in livestock and poultry conservation initiatives.

Smith remarks, “We're very eager to contribute to the eHow Pets Channel and to connect with like-minded people all over the world! One of my goals with heritage livestock and poultry is to educate the public about how easy it can be and how rewarding it is to raise farm animals. I’m anxious to share our easy step-by-step instructions and how-to care advice for providing shelters and habitats for animals, how to breed them and how to raise them properly. We also have other farm animals, indigenous wild animals and a lot of pets that we are also enthusiastic to talk about.”

eHow Pets launched recently and is part of the massive, global effort by Google (NSDQ:GOOG) to produce thousands of hours of exclusive premium content. Google announced late last year that it is partnering with dozens of media companies, Hollywood production companies and online video creators to generate about 25 hours of new, original programming per day on the online giant YouTube.

Demand Media (NYSE: DMD), based in Santa Monica, Calif., owns and manages the eHow Home Channel, partnering with P. Allen Smith to provide content. Content for the new channel will be filmed in Arkansas, with the majority of filming taking place at Smith’s Moss Mountain Farm, outside of Little Rock. Says Mike Cowan, Senior Director of Original Programming at Demand Media, “We chose Allen as a talent for this show because of his expertise in this area and for the high caliber of his work with the wide variety of pets and animals at his Moss Mountain Farm. Allen is well versed in this subject matter and is well known in conservation circles so his opinions and know-how are invaluable. Allen is a natural-born teacher and he connects with his audience in a way that is both informational and entertaining.”

YouTube has enlisted a select roster of stars to help to reach a generation of viewers more familiar with smartphones than TV remotes. Industry analysts have called the YouTube announcement a jump toward “quality entertainment” on any screen – laptop, phone, tablet, desktop and TV. More viewers are watching programs online, instead of on TV, and the Internet video giant is hoping to capitalize on that trend, especially in the 18- to-34 age demographic that advertisers want.

Smith will also guide viewers in a behind the scenes style look at the care and/or conservation efforts of certain animals during the day-to-day life at Moss Mountain. Smith is also the host of two public television programs, P. Allen Smith's Garden Home, P. Allen Smith’s Garden to Table and the syndicated 30-minute show P. Allen Smith Gardens.
