Area rabies alert issued

Hot Springs Animal Services issued an alert today to Garland County residents of recent increased rabies activity in the local area.  In the past 60 days, Animal Services has submitted three rabies vectors, or common rabies carriers, to the State Epidemiology Lab for rabies testing that have been confirmed as positive for rabies.   These vectors included one bat, found in the Millcreek area, and two skunks, found in the Pearcy area.  All three animals were found in areas in Garland County, outside city limits.

Hot Springs and Garland County residents are advised to ensure that their pets are vaccinated for rabies.  Rabies vaccinations can be obtained from any veterinarian in the Garland County area.

Pet owners are also advised to be aware of state rabies vaccine requirements.  The State of Arkansas' rabies protocol recognizes a three-year rabies vaccine.  However, pets must first be vaccinated with a one-year vaccine.  At the one-year anniversary date, they become eligible to receive the three-year vaccine.

The State of Arkansas is reporting increased rabies activity throughout the state during the first quarter of 2012.  Area residents are cautioned to avoid interaction with any nocturnal animals, such as bats and skunks, that are exhibiting daytime activity, and to contact Animal Services, 262-2091.
