Attorney General Dustin McDaniel announced the Arkansas Crime Victims
Reparations Board awarded $352,923.85 to victims of crime in May. Awards were
made in 177 new cases. Additional expenses were paid in 30 previously submitted
cases.
The State’s Crime Victims Reparations Program provides
financial assistance for victims of violent crime. The program helps pay for
unexpected expenses such as medical treatment and mental health counseling.
Victims are also eligible for compensation for lost wages and replacement
services under the program.
McDaniel’s office administers the program, which is in
its 25th year.
The Arkansas Crime Victims Reparations Board determines
claims that are eligible for payment and how much money will be awarded to each
claimant. Most awards are limited to $10,000 or less. However, for victims
receiving catastrophic injuries resulting in total and permanent disability, the
maximum award can be as high as $25,000.
In 2011, the Board awarded a total of $3,820,230.84 to
victims of crime in Arkansas.
Court costs and fees fund the program, with a portion of
the funding coming from fines imposed on convicted criminals.
Members of the Crime Victims Reparations Board are: Dr.
Janice Church of Little Rock, Colleen Nick of Alma, Redious Yancy of North
Little Rock, Louis Jones of Fayetteville and Bryce Brewer of Little
Rock.
