Bringing the celebration of Tanglewood’s 75th anniversary beyond the BSO’s summer home in the Berkshires, the Boston Symphony Orchestra announces details of its first-ever 75 free digital streams program (complete list appears below), designed to offer music lovers around the globe a glimpse into the storied performance history of the famed music festival founded in 1937. The Tanglewood 75 free streams will be available through tanglewood.org, with one free stream being offered each day of the summer, June 20-September 2, starting at 8 a.m. EST; when the 24-hour stream has ended, the digital music will be available at www.tanglewood.org for purchase as a download. Most of the recordings featured have been digitized, re-mastered, and are being made available to the public for the first time ever, offered in MP3 and 128 or 256 kbps formats.

QUICK OVERVIEW OF TANGLEWOOD 75 STREAM PROJECT

The repertoire for the 75 streams has been chosen from a vast array of programs and artists and will feature many of the greatest conductors, composers, and performers of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center, many of whom went on to have major careers and perform in the world’s most prestigious concert halls and opera houses. The Boston Symphony Orchestra is grateful to the dozens of conductors, instrumentalists, and singers, who have generously allowed their performances to be included in this project.

The 75 Tanglewood Streams have been organized by week, with each week offering a snapshot of Tanglewood performances over several decades, in works grand and simple, and in recorded sound of widely contrasting quality, providing listeners with a broad historical perspective no matter when they visit tanglewood.org to listen to a stream. In an effort to best reflect the wide range of musical genres that have played an important part in Tanglewood’s rich history, each week will showcase one performance from each of the following categories: operas and large-scale works; works led by BSO music directors and major guest conductors; great soloist appearances; composers as interpreters (both of their own and others’ works); Tanglewood Music Center performances; recitals; and popular music genres, including Boston Pops concerts, popular artists, and jazz.

Starting with the first stream on June 20, visitors to the site will not only get to listen to some of the great performances from Tanglewood’s 75 years of audio archives, but they will also have access to photos, program notes on works and performers written by the distinguished former Boston Globe critic Richard Dyer, and other information designed to offer listeners a historical context for the conductors, performers, composers, and music chosen to be featured in this special project.

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF TANGLEWOOD, THE BSO’S SUMMER HOME SINCE 1937

One of the most popular and acclaimed music festivals in the world, Tanglewood—the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home since 1937—is located in the beautiful Berkshire Hills between Lenox and Stockbridge, Massachusetts. With an average annual attendance of more than 300,000 visitors each season, Tanglewood has a $60 million impact on the Berkshire economy each summer. Tanglewood presents orchestra concerts by the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and visiting ensembles, featuring many of the greatest classical musicians of our time; recital and chamber music concerts in the intimate setting of Ozawa Hall; programs highlighting the young musicians of the Tanglewood Music Center; performances by some of today’s leading popular artists; and a season-ending Labor Day Weekend festival. Tanglewood is family-friendly, with free lawn tickets available for children and young people age 17 and under, a 50% discount on Friday-evening lawn tickets for college and graduate students, and a variety of special programs for children, including Kids Corner, Watch and Play, and the annual Family Concert, this year to take place Saturday, August 25. Tanglewood is also the home of the Tanglewood Music Center, the BSO’s preeminent summer music academy for the advanced training of young professional musicians, and Days in the Arts, a multi-cultural arts-immersion program that gives 400 fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-graders from communities across Massachusetts the opportunity to explore the arts throughout each week-long session of the summer. These are just two of the BSO’s many educational and outreach activities, for which more information is available at www.bso.org—the largest and most visited orchestral website in the country, receiving about 7.5 million visitors annually and generating over $70 million in revenue since its launch in 1996. The Boston Symphony Orchestra is online at www.bso.org. Music lovers can follow the BSO on Facebook at www.facebook.com/bostonsymphony or on Twitter at www.twitter.com/bostonsymphony.
