The Saline County Library will host a Harry Potter Quiz Bowl Tournament and End–of-Summer-Reading Celebration for all ages from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23at Herzfeld Library. Registration is required for quiz bowl participants and opens July 5.
Head of Children’s Services Randi Eskridge said the event is just in time for the debut of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in theatres and a good way to wrap up a world-themed Summer Reading program.
“Harry Potter is a worldwide phenomenon,” said Eskridge. “There’s no better way to bring a world-themed program full circle than to host an event that involves all ages and levels of interest.”
Quiz bowl participants must have read all seven Harry Potter books to participate in the tournament and registrants will be randomly assigned a team unless otherwise specified. Team registration will also be allowed as space is available.
“Age means nothing in this competition,” said School-Age Librarian Marisa Frantz. “Many of the kiddos will know the material far better than the adults, so we are encouraging all ages to participate.”
Winners of the tournament will each receive a Sony E-Reader, members of the second place team will each receive $50 Amazon shopping sprees and members of the third place team will each receive free movie passes to CINEMARK theatres.
During the tournament, several other activities will be available for all ages. They will also be Harry Potter-themed.
“Patrons can visit Ollivanders Wand Shop to see which wand chooses them, try their hand at making Professor Slughorn’s Felix Felicis, visit Honeydukes for snacks and a beverage between 2:30-3:30 p.m. while supplies last, gaze into Professor Trelawney’s Crystal Ball to receive their fortune and much more.”
She re-emphasized that all ages are encouraged to attend.
To register for the tournament, call 778-4766 beginning July 5
