Twarted burglary in Garland County

Residential Burglary thwarted and one in custody after being caught and detained by church members.

Deputies received a call of a Burglary in Progress, on Old Bear Road, Sunday morning and arrived to find the suspect, Charles Taylor, being detained by the home owner and a church member.

The report states that Sharon Paredes went to her residence, which is the parsonage behind the New Hope Church in Royal, before church started on Sunday. When she went into the residence she heard someone rattling the basement door and tried to get them to identify themselves. After getting no response, she ran out of the house and seen her husband and another church member walking toward the church and alerted them to the burglar.

Both men went around the back of the residence and encountered the suspect, wearing a black mask and gloves, exiting the basement door. The suspect attempted to flee but was tackled by the church member, Jeff Turner, and both men detained the suspect until deputies could arrive. Mr. Turner injured his leg in the attempt to restrain the suspect and had to be transported to the hospital.

Deputies on the scene seized a green backpack from the suspect which contained a crowbar that matched the pry marks on the doors of the residence. Two screens on the back windows were observed to be damaged and one window that was partially open.

Once at the Garland County Sheriff's Department the suspect made the comment that "he was caught red-handed".
