Author lecture at Saline County Libraries

Local author Grif Stockley will discuss his novel “Expert Testimony” Monday, July 11 at both branches of the Saline County Library: 1 p.m. at Boswell Library and 4 p.m. at Herzfeld Library. Both events are open to the public.

A native of Mississippi, Stockley grew up in Marianna, Ark. He graduated from Southwestern College (now Rhodes College) in 1965 with a degree in international relations and spent two years in Colombia as a Peace Corps worker, helping develop the economy of rural areas. Stockley says his lifelong political beliefs were shaped in the process “The irony is I had to go to Colombia to come to terms with the kind of poverty and limitations that existed in my own hometown for half the population.”

After returning from the Peace Corps, Stockley was drafted and after completing his tour of duty, he received his juris doctorate from the UofA at Fayetteville. He then became employed with the Center for Arkansas Legal Services, representing the working class in civil law cases for 32 years.

“Expert Testimony” is the first in a series of five mystery novels, in which readers are introduced to Gideon Page, “a public defender, grieving widower, conflicted father and the unlikely hero at the heart of a loaded courtroom drama full of complex legal and ethical questions.”

In addition to his works of fiction, Stockley also has non-fiction works that deal with the history of race relations in Arkansas and is currently working on “The 1959 Negro Boys Industrial School Fire,” a work that explores the tragedy that killed 21 teenage boys. He has received many literary and historical awards and was inducted into the Arkansas Writers Hall of Fame in 2001.
