New jail on the horizon for Garland County

The proposed one-cent tax passed yesterday in Garland County. The County will build a new jail to replace the overcrowded facility adjacent to the Garland County Courthouse.

The 88-person facility has been housing 200 or more prisoners on an ongoing basis. Due to overcrowding many non-violent offenders were routinely released. Crime has been on the increase in Garland County due to the release of prisoners.

The new jail proposal was considered by voters two years ago. Garland County voters approved a new jail at that time but voted down the proposed sales tax to pay for it.

The escalating crime stats, a good advertising campaign and a republican administration were all components in the success of yesterday's vote.
