Attorney General Dustin McDaniel announced the Arkansas Crime Victims
Reparations Board awarded $390,064.13 in reparations to victims of crime in
September. Awards were made in 212 new cases. Additional expenses were paid in
24 previously submitted cases.
Victims of violent crime in Arkansas may be eligible for
compensation from the Crime Victims Reparations Program, which is administered
by the Attorney General’s Office. The program offers financial assistance to
eligible crime victims to defray the cost of expenses associated with the crime,
such as medical treatment or mental health counseling.
“The General Assembly established the Crime Victims
Reparations Program so that victims of crime in our State could receive tangible
assistance at the time they need it the most,” McDaniel said. “We encourage
crime victims to consider applying for benefits from this important
program.”
The Crime Victims Reparations Program was established in
1987 and is funded through court costs and fees. Additionally, a portion of the
funding is from fines imposed on convicted criminals.
Most awards are limited to $10,000 or less. However, for
victims receiving catastrophic injuries resulting in total and permanent
disability, the maximum award can be as high as $25,000.
The Crime Victims Reparations Board determines which
claims are eligible for payment and the amount to be awarded to each
claimant.
In 2011, the Crime Victims Reparations Board awarded
$3,820,230.84 to victims of crime in Arkansas.
Members of the Crime Victims Reparations Board are: Dr.
Janice Church of Little Rock, Colleen Nick of Alma, Redious Yancy of North
Little Rock, Louis Jones of Fayetteville and Bryce Brewer of Little
Rock.
