The Property Owners’ Association Department of Public Safety
reminds residents to consider the following Space Heater Safety Tips.
·
Space heaters should be UL (Underwriters Laboratories)
approved.
·
Remember to keep clothes, drapes and anything
else combustible at least three feet away from space heaters.
·
Inspect the space heater’s power cord
periodically for damage, fraying and heat. If the cord inspection reveals any
of these issues, the heater should be replaced. Proper cleaning is essential and
should be performed regularly. Power cords must have a working three-prong
grounded cord.
·
Space heaters should only be plugged directly
into an approved outlet. Do not use an extension cord.
·
Do not use space heaters while sleeping.
·
Always unplug space heaters when not in use. The
heater should also be equipped with a tip-over, shut-off device.
·
Do not hide the space heater cord under a rug or
carpet, which may cause it to overheat and start a fire.
