Message from Garland County Sheriff Larry Sanders

This time of year brings out the best in most of us. For the burglars, thieves, con-artists and other Christmas Grinch’s, it brings out the worst…..and nothing can ruin the Christmas spirit faster than becoming the victim of a crime. Unfortunately, criminals see the Christmas season as an opportunity to break into your home or business and steal your cash, credit cards and, most noticeable, your gifts! We are seeing this already with a noticeable increase in burglaries and breaking or entering calls. Here are a few tips for protecting your home, which should help you and your family enjoy a safer Christmas season.

1. Be adamant about locking doors and windows, even if only leaving for a few minutes.

2. Although we all love to….. Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in a window, so that it’s visible and tempting from the street. Criminals plan their break-ins around what is visible and accessible!

3. Do not advertise that you are not home. Newspapers, mail, lights burning continually and online social media sites are a cue to criminals that you are away and your home is open to them.

4. Use an inexpensive light timer when you are away and have a neighbor pick up your newspaper and mail.

5. When out for short periods, turn on a radio or television. This gives the impression that someone is home.

6. DO NOT hide keys around the entrance to your home. Give a spare to a trusted neighbor. Criminals know to look for them.

7. Do not run extension cords, for outdoor Christmas lights, through a partially opened window or door. This allows accessibility to criminals.

8. Do not place empty electronics boxes outside for trash pickup. Criminals watch for this and know exactly what you have received for Christmas. Break the boxes down or cut them up for concealment. Watch for additional tips, and information on protecting your property, in the coming weeks.
