Labor Day murder of Village POA employee in Garland County

At approximately 3:31 p.m. September 3, Garland County dispatchers received a call of a shooting at the Pop A Top Tavern in the 3700 block of Park Avenue.

Witnesses say that the victim, 46 year old Hot Springs Village POA employee James Toby Fowlks , and the suspect, 58 year old Alan Ray Edwards, picture above, got into an argument and Edwards left the business. Edwards returned a short time later, with a gun, and shot Fowlks. Fowlks died at the scene.

Edwards was subdued by patrons of the business and was injured in the process. He was transported and admitted to a local hospital with unknown injuries and his condition is unknown at this point.

Deputies are guarding Edwards at the hospital, pending specific charges.

Investigators interviewed witnesses. Edwards was charged with 1st Degree Murder and Criminal Attempt at 1st Degree Murder, with a $0 bond. Court date is to be set.

  1. Does anyone have any further news on this? I have heard all sorts of rumors - that the men who detained the shooter were later arrested, that the shooter died at the hospital. Can anyone confirm or negate these stories?

  2. Amanda, as far as I know, the brave patrons that sent Edwards to the hospital were not charged for disarming and holding the alleged murderer while waiting for the police to respond. My sources say he did not die in the hospital. I will let you know more when I do.
