Money for Arkansas universities

U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman recently joined Congressmen Rick Crawford (AR-1) to announce that four Arkansas colleges will receive a combined $1,054,325 in Upward Bound Math and Science Grants to give Arkansas students the skills they need to pursue a career in the rapidly-growing math and science fields.

The Upward Bound Math and Science Program provides services such as academic tutoring, preparation courses for college entrance exams and applications, and alternative education programs to strengthen students’ math and science skills and help them achieve success in their higher education pursuits. The program targets high school first-generation college students and low-income individuals.

“If we want to compete in today’s global economy, we need strong minds who are devoted to scientific research and advancements,” Pryor said. “These funds will allow students to pursue their passion for science and help us keep jobs here at home—a win for Arkansas and our nation’s future.”

“As a former school board member in Rogers, I understand the value of needs-based grants and support federal education programs, like Upward Bound, that help Arkansans attain the quality education they need for the careers of tomorrow. Science and math are the backbone of so many 21st Century jobs, so these grants will help Arkansans prepare for careers in today’s global economy,” Boozman said.

“Math and Science education is vital for Arkansas students to be able to compete globally. The Upward Bound Grants will help students in the First District achieve their maximum potential,” said Crawford.

The following schools have been selected to receive Upward Bound Math and Science Grants:

• Arkansas Tech University: $250,000

• Lyon College: $293,925

• University of Arkansas, Fayetteville: $250,000

• University of Arkansas, Fort Smith: $260,400
