Preparing for the parade for Fallen Heroes

Last February, Rotarian Charles Williams, a member of the Rotary Club of Scenic 7, suggested the club bring the Arkansas Fallen Heroes Memorial honoring Arkansas servicemen that have died in the Global War on Terror to the Village. The membership agreed it was a great idea.
A committee of four was formed to take care of the details bringing the memorial to the Village and in addition they created a motorcycle escort winding its way through the Village.
Yesterday morning at 11 a.m. the parade started at Mountainside United Methodist Church and covered the distance of DeSoto Boulevard on its way from the east gate and out the west gate to the property adjacent to El Padrino's.
The temporary memorial is on property managed by Jim Davis' and the members of the Rotary Club of Scenic 7 are thankful for his donation of the land for the week the memorial is here.

So much to do, so little time

There is so much going on this weekend but my regular notes are at home and I am at the radio station. Marilyn wraps up this weekend at the Central Theatre in Hot Springs. Plaza Suite is running at the Pocket in Hot Springs. The bath tub races are tomorrow morning in Hot Springs. The Fallen Heroes Memorial rolls through Hot Springs Village tomorrow morning with a motorcycle escort. The Memorial will be on display for one week at the empty lot adjacent to El Padrino's Restaurant on Highway 7. The parade starts at 11 at Mountainside United Methodist and travels through the Village on DeSoto Boulevard and out the west gate to the right.
BBQ sandwiches with chips and a soda will be avaialable for a $7 lunch on Saturday at the Memorial sight on Highway 7. The event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Scenic 7. Donations are encouraged to benefit the Memorial finding a permanent home.

Art at airport

The public is invited to an art exhibit opening reception from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 at Hot Springs Memorial Field, 525 Airport Road. The exhibit will feature the works of Traditional Art Guild member Anita Bogard.

Anita is a long-time local resident who began taking evening art classes at National Park Community College in 2003. She began working with acrylics but has recently focused on the use of soft pastels depicting a variety of subjects. Her works will remain on display throughout the month of May through the middle of June.

The third Saturday of every month throughout the year, the airport will host a new art exhibit by a TAG member, beginning with an opening reception. For information on TAG membership, contact Kathryn Curry, Traditional Art Guild president, at 760-0897.

Big band concert Sunday

The Muses Creative Artistry Project proudly presents the Bathhouse Big Band in concert on Sunday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. on the Arlington Lawn, across from the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa in beautiful downtown Hot Springs. The concert is offered to the public free of charge through the generous support of the Friends of the Fordyce and Hot Springs National Park.

The Bathhouse Big Band, led by New Orleans trombonist Steve Suter, is comprised of the some finest musicians in the country. World class players such as Bill Huntington and Clyde Pound are joined by talented local musicians Brandon Dorris, Dave Williams, Mike Copeland and Jay Payette. The music will be enhanced by the smooth vocal stylings of Ken Goodman of the Vienna Theatre, also in downtown Hot Springs.

The group will perform such all-time favorites as “All of Me,” “Jersey Bounce,” “In A Mellow Tone,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Sentimental Journey,” and others.

Originally organized on behalf of the Arkansas Theatre Works, the band will reunite on Sunday to perform some of the greatest big band tunes of all time. What better place to play and listen to beautiful music than the spacious stage on the Arlington Lawn, with the picturesque thermal water cascade nearby. Patrons are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to relax and enjoy the performance.
